(biochemistry) Either of two proteolytic enzymes, found in pineapples, that are used as meat tenderizers.Examples: "I let her in and left her sitting on the sofa while I microwaved some Chinese rice and poured pineapple juice into a glass. It was her comfort meal – grease and bromelain. She had often lectured me on pineapple’s anti-inflammatory properties, how it helped prevent cataracts and heart disease."
