(obsolete, rare) A trench.Examples: "Thence all the Rules for Cattel, their Admiſſures, their Caſtration, &c. at ſeveral times of the Moon; for the Ground, enjoining to dig their ſcrobes; for the Planting of Trees at the Full Moon; ſoiling their Grounds at the Decreaſes, to avoid Worms, &c. making the beds, the Seed plats, while the Moon is up; ſowing Seed, and planting Trees, at the Increaſe; covering Roots at the Full; gathering and Houſing of Corn, &c. at the Wane: Plin. 2. (entomology) A groove in the rostrum of weevils, or on the outer side of the mandible.Examples: "scrobe (skrōb), n. [< L. scrobis, a ditch, dike, trench. Hence ult. scrobicula, etc., and prob. ult. screw¹.] In entom.: (a) A groove in the side of the rostrum in which the scape or basal joint of the antenna is received, in the weevils or curculios. These scrobes may be directed straight forward, or upward or downward, and thus furnish characters much used in classifying such beetles. (b) A groove on the outer side of the mandible, more fully called mandibular scrobe."
